In “A Splash of Red” we welcome anyone who enjoys singing. Our members mostly live within about a 15 mile radius of Fairford. We rehearse on Thursday evenings, 7.30 to 9.30pm at Fairford Primary School hall. Why not come and give us a go?
If you’d like to sing with us, please get in touch.
FAQs
Do I have to be able to read music?
No. While most of us can read music to a degree, it’s not a requirement. A lot of people pick up music-reading skills as they go along, though, and find it helpful.
Will I be good enough, do I need previous experience, and do I have to audition?
We welcome enthusiastic singers of all abilities and recognise that many people will have been put off at some point in their lives by someone telling them they are no good. Usually people are better than they think, and of course your singing gets better the more you do it. We don’t hold auditions and you don’t have to have previous choir experience, although many of our members do.
Do you provide music?
We ask members to buy their own music, if they wish to have copies. In this way they can choose which pieces they want and we can keep subscription costs down (we’re not a profit-making organisation). Our music secretary orders music, often at a discounted price. Pieces cost around £2 on average. If people leave, we can arrange to buy back their music.
What does it cost?
We charge subs of £115 a year. Where else can you have so much fun for less than the cost of a takeaway cup of coffee per week?
What is the time commitment?
While we understand that not everyone can always make every rehearsal, we do expect our members to commit to performing at concerts as often as possible, to attend practices and to learn the words and music. At concerts we sing from memory. To help, we provide sound files for some songs, and mobile phones can be used to record songs at rehearsals for home practice.
What is the dress code?
For performances we wear plain black with a ‘splash of red’, such as a flower, scarf or necklace. We enjoy the chance to look a little glamorous.
